Our stay at the Imperial Riding School, Autograph Collection in Vienna

I had the opportunity to stay at the Imperial Riding School, Autograph Collection in Vienna twice during two different seasons: spring and winter. Each time felt like stepping into a carefully preserved piece of Austrian history. As part of a collaboration with the hotel, I was able to experience both its timeless elegance and its modern-day comforts firsthand.

Whether you’re visiting Vienna for the first time or returning to see it through new eyes, this hotel offers a blend of heritage and hospitality that feels both elevated and warm.

Imperial Riding School History

Originally built in 1727 and once used as an imperial military riding school, the property has undergone a thoughtful transformation, preserving its Baroque architecture while adding modern luxury.

Throughout the hotel, you’ll find subtle equestrian touches that speak to its past:

  • Warm parquet floors designed to resemble worn stables
  • Cabinets inlaid with horsehair
  • Leather headboards, stable-style doors, and watering-can-inspired lighting
  • Art inspired by Empress Elisabeth (a horse lover herself)

The result is a space that feels artistic and meaningful—a true Autograph Collection gem.

My Favorite Spaces in the Hotel

After a long day exploring Vienna’s cobblestone streets, I always found myself drawn to two areas in particular:

The Lounge & Café

This cozy and chic space offers plush seating and fresh coffee with local pastries available for purchase. It’s the perfect quiet corner to reset in the afternoon or journal about your travels.

A unique touch I loved seeing every day? A bowl of complimentary apples and infused water in the lobby. It was simple, yet unforgettable. After hours of walking or a ride on the tram, that little refreshment felt like a thoughtful, personal welcome home.

🍷 Elstar Restaurant & The Farrier Bar

Whether you’re popping in for a drink at The Farrier Bar or sitting down for a romantic dinner at Elstar, both experiences feel warm, elevated, and effortlessly inviting. The ambiance is modern yet intimate—perfect for a solo moment or an evening with friends.

I especially loved ending my evenings here; the food and drinks were absolutely delicious, and the atmosphere was just what I needed after a full day of exploring Vienna.

🍳 Breakfast You Won’t Want to Miss

I’m not always a buffet person but the Imperial Riding School’s breakfast buffet was impressive.
Every morning featured:

  • A wide variety of fresh local options
  • Juices, fruits, Austrian breads, cheeses, and eggs cooked to order
  • Smoothie and yogurt bar
  • Continental breakfast options

Having breakfast at the hotel is a great option and a perfect way to start the day.

The Perfect Location

The hotel is located in a great area with easy access to major sights and is incredibly well-connected via Vienna’s efficient tram system. Here are five places you can walk to:

  1. Belvedere Palace & Gardens
  2. Hundertwasser House
  3. Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas
  4. Stadtpark (City Park)
  5. The Ringstraße & Vienna State Opera (about a 15–20 min stroll or short tram ride)

Tram Line 71 stops just minutes away, making it easy to get around the entire city without hassle. Be sure to check out my travel guide!

Final Thoughts

From the thoughtful design inspired by Vienna’s imperial past to the warm, welcoming staff, this hotel is more than just a stay, it’s an experience. Both times I stayed here, I felt equally relaxed and inspired, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the collaboration.
